Veggie Chic

You eating less meat benefits the whole world

by Jul on April 4th, 2007

earthThe bad news, which I’ve mentioned on Veggie Chic before, is that livestock are doing massive amounts of harm to the planet. As an example, each dairy cow produces around 120 pounds of wet manure per day, according to the EPA , not to mention the greenhouse gasses they emit. This waste is wreaking havoc on the environment, polluting groundwater and rivers, and leading to problems such as E. coli contamination of vegetables.

The good news is that you can do something about it. You don’t have to be in charge of a giant corporation or be the president of a country or in any other position of power to make a difference when it comes to this issue.

So what can you do? Eat less meat and dairy. It’s as simple as that. The less meat and dairy you consume, the fewer farm animals are bred, and the less waste is produced. The world’s environment will thank you.

    Hi Jul,

funny thing is that I actually stumpled upon your “This-non-American-Life” blog first and then saw that you are not only living in Switzerland (I am originally from Lucerne, but live in Ireland) but also vegetarian!!!! These are my exact words as well, we do have to try eating less meat, for the sake of the animals, the planet and ourselves!!!! Its not easy to become a vegetarian in a country that is sooo focused on meat in every menu (I dont even like to go out eating for lunch, because the only thing vegetarian on offer is Quiche, except probably for the soup of the day!!)Although I have to admit that recently people start to become more consious of what they are stuffing their faces with and you can find more and more vegetarian products in the supermarket now!!! :)

Hi Fabienne! Thanks for stopping by and saying hi. One thing I love about Switzerland is that I can find a great variety of veggie options in the grocery and health food stores. Hopefully the restaurants will catch up one of these days…
