Yes or no to GM food?

by Jul on February 20th, 2007

James and the Giant PeachI first started learning about GM (genetically modified) food in the 90s when I moved to Europe. It was a big, controversial topic on this continent at the time, even though I have barely heard of the stuff back home. The Europeans were fighting hard to keep GM foods out of their supermarkets and off of their tables.

My opinion of GM foods hasn’t developed very far over the years - I’m basically where I’ve always been, stuck between two persuasive arguments. On one hand, it’s clear that the farther we get from natural, unmodified food, the worse our health seems to get. Obviously this is not a good move.

On the other hand, if GM foods can help feed the world’s starving populations, if they can be designed to resist the pestilence and adverse conditions that plague crops in certain countries, then why not use them? Isn’t ‘frankenfood’ better than no food?

Since it’s not actually up to me to solve the world’s hunger problems, I tend to not think about this issue all that much. But then every once in a while, an article such as this one about a suppressed report which shows a cancer link to GM potatoes gets me worried again.

Are you concerned about GM foods?

I can’t say I’m all that concerned considering we live in a world of chemicals that have much more immediate effects on our health. I’ve got lots more on genetically modified food over at Genetics and Health.

lol I don’t think I’m a guru of much but I do like to collect info on anything related to genetics.

I am from Africa, where kids go to bed hungry, but currently living in the United States. Americans don’t distingusih between genetically modified food and the so-called natural foods. Their scientists have not told them GM foods are bad. Why should they be worried? Read about me here.
