What a perfect day to start vegetarian blogging
October 1st is officially World Vegetarian Day, which kicks off World Vegetarian Awareness month. Observed since 1977, World Vegetarian Day includes festivities in cities around the globe (although these mostly seem to be occurring in cities such as San Francisco, where vegetarian awareness is already starting out pretty high).
So how does one celebrate World Vegetarian Day or World Vegetarian Awareness month? Despite my 15+ years of vegetarianism, I have to admit I have never once marked these holidays. Should I make everyone I meet aware of the fact that I am a vegetarian, say by telling them? Perhaps take out a billboard that says ‘Vegetarians exist!”? Gather up a big group and march through the streets chanting “We’re here! We don’t eat meat! Get used to it!”?
OK, so as you can see, I’m not very good at coming up with ideas for this. Luckily, sites such as http://www.worldvegetarianday.org/ have suggestions for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Some of their ideas for vegetarians include:
- Wear informative vegetarian message T-shirts throughout the month
- Ask libraries (public, college, high school, etc) to set-up a display of their vegetarian titles
- Host a screening of vegetarian and related documentaries or films for friends, and/or arrange to have them shown on public access TV
- Ask your city mayor or town supervisor to sign a World Vegetarian Day proclamation (Contact us for a sample)
- Leaflet at fairs, malls, or at other public events
Their suggestions for meat-eaters basically boil down to “eat less meat” (by going vegetarian for a day, a week, a month…) and “learn about vegetarianism”.
I think I’ll celebrate by… blogging about vegetarianism. If I start to feel like that isn’t enough, perhaps I’ll get out all my vegetarian cookbooks and arrange them in a catchy display on the kitchen table. How will you celebrate?
