A vegetarian diet makes your bones weak? That’s news to me… very suspicious-sounding news. Travis Barker, the drummer for the band Plus-44, is claiming just that, and says he is eating meat again on doctor’s orders. I’d like to see the science that backs up this advice. Although there is a lot of conflicting information out there about whether a high-protein diet is good or bad for calcium absorption, I have yet to see anything that suggests that protein from animal sources is better than protein from plant sources in this regard. This article claims meat and soy protein play equal roles in calcium absorption. This is one issue I’ll have to investigate further.

Sadie Frost (in the news only because she’s Jude Law’s ex-wife, as far as I can tell) is quite happy with her vegetarian diet these days. I like her “food is there to be enjoyed” attitude.

And since we’re on the subject of b-list celebrities and vegetarianism, Alicia Silverstone recently praised her vegan diet for helping to keep off the pounds. Sounds like her active lifestyle is helping out, too.

Is being the ex-wife of an actor a profession that requires strong bones? I might be more convinced if Ms. Frost deceded to take up weightlifting or sumo wrestling.

Do you think there are any vegan sumo wrestlers? I just have Japan on the brain today.
Now I’m thinking about that sumo wrestler diet coke commercial from the 80s.
