Veggie Links for 7-Apr-2008: crazy talk edition
- Reading this reader’s question about cooking for rude relatives , it amazes me that these omnivores would go out of their way to be jerks when served vegetarian meals. What’s up with that?
- Hey you vegetarians, know how you need to act? No? Well let this guy tell you. Apparently you’ve been pissing off the whole world by not following these rules. All I can say is thank goodness someone was finally brave enough to put it all out there.
- And just when you thought we vegetarians had a wacky enough reputation, the Creationists try to cozy up to us.
OK, that’s enough crazy links for today. I’m going to go study up on how to not offend people by learning to cook meat and boycotting Boca burgers while attempting to take the bible literally.
Not.

Hi, love your blog.
Ken Ham, that little nutter butter, has been saying for years that after the second coming and the new Earth is created, we’ll all be vegetarians. Well, those of us that aren’t burning in hell, that is. Seems to me an awful lot of work for something we could do right now.
I’m always amazed at how rude people are to me because I’m a vegetarian. I think people are threatened by it.
I don’t preach or anything but that doesn’t stop the almost constant jokes and rude comments at my expense. Or worse, being invited to a steak house for dinner then wondering why I don’t order more than the side of mushrooms.
Maybe it’s just me and where I live, which is dangerously close to that Creation Museum.
I’ll ponder over all of this while I munch on a fake breaded “chicken” patty tonight. Ooops…

I love your blog, but you need to jump up into April with the rest of us. :)

LOL Marti! I guess I’m just not ready to come to terms with the fact that winter is over. :)
[The title of this post referred to March instead of April until Marti pointed it out and I fixed it.]

I just realized the previous links post is labeled March, too. I must really have a mental block against April…

Like Tree, I too deal with “jokes” at my expense and the occasional challenge to my diet/lifestyle/beliefs. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times when I think those who joke about or challenge me are idiots for not seeing things the way I do, but, I’m human. I make mistakes.
Out of all the jokes and challenges, though, the one instance that really left me baffled was happened last year when I was experiencing a financial slump. Someone actually told me the reason I was broke was all the “vegetarian food” I was buying. And here I thought I was actually SAVING money by no longer buying meat and no longer eating fast food (but for the occasional Veggie Delite at Subway)?

Tree & Alicia - ugh, it makes me so sad to hear about vegetarians still being harassed by others about our food choices. Why do people feel so threatened when you make a choice that’s different from theirs? Grrr.
And what’s with this idea that food is more expensive if it doesn’t contain meat? Ever checked out the price of a bag of dried beans? Or even canned beans? Grrr again.

LOL, I know, it makes no sense to me either. The man who said it to me is a very stubborn, set-in-his-ways, I’m-always-right-and-you’re-always-wrong type of man anyway, so when he got this thought in his head (that veggie food was the cause of my $$ slump), there was just no talking to him. Luckily, he’s not a very big part of my life anymore, haha.

I wonder if people react to vegetarians because they feel guilty or believe they don’t have the discipline to be a vegetarian? Like some part of them knows their habits are unhealthy, so they get angry. I wonder this because the people who give me the most grief have some of the worst eating habits.
