I use brown rice and the package directions say to cook it for 45 minutes. I put the water and rice in a put and bring it to a boil on my electric stove. Then I lower the heat to simmer and cover the pot, leaving the lid open just a little bit. I let it simmer for about 30 minutes and then I turn off the stove, cover the pot tightly and let it rest on the hot stove for about 20 minutes. It always comes out grain for grain.
PS: I have a cheap rice cooker and It usually scorches the rice. So if you decide to buy one, get the best, not the cheapest.
