Vegetarian in Paris?

by Jul on October 20th, 2006

Be sure to skip the vegetarian restaurants, says this recent article on Bloomberg. According to the author, “Vegetarians can eat well in Paris, so long as they steer clear of restaurants serving only vegetables.” Although it sounds hard to believe, she was able to find better vegetarian fare at traditional French restaurants than those she tried which catered specifically to non-meat-eaters.

Fodor's Paris 2007 (Fodor's Gold Guides)

From my own experience, I can say that French cuisine does not tend towards the particularly vegetarian-friendly, but like most major cities, Paris offers enough restaurant variety to please almost anyone. While on my first trip to the French capital I ended up eating more than enough cheese crepes, salads, and chocolate croissants, the second time around I discovered a little more variety in the local offerings. This was in large part thanks to my local host Natale, whose intimate knowledge of the Parisian restaurant scene ensured I got to try a variety of yummy things without ever stepping foot in an exclusively vegetarian restaurant.

The Rough Guide to Paris 10 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

If you’re not lucky enough to know a local who can point you in the direction of local vegetarian delights, you can still dine well in Paris or any other major city by doing a little advanced research. Guidebooks such as Fodor’s and The Rough Guide tend to do a good job of pointing out places serving tasty vegetarian options, and don’t forget the internet. A quick Google search on the terms ‘vegetarian’ and ‘Paris’ will return more restaurant reviews than you can shake a baguette at. Bon appétit!
