Vegetarian Carnival #14: yummy winter recipes and more
Welcome to the March 2008 edition of the vegetarian carnival. Since it was so much fun last time, I decided to start this edition with my top 5 favorite entries again:
- VnV presents A Vegetarian in Egypt posted at Veggie Monologues. I am a sucker for vegetarian travel stories. Sounds like they did pretty well in Egypt!
- squawkfox presents Ten Reasons Soaking Dried Beans Can Change Your Life posted at squawkfox, saying, “Stop buying caged canned beans. Here’s ten reasons buying dried beans can change your life!” I tend to get lazy and go for the canned beans, but thanks to these reminders, I’m going to try to use dried beans more often.
- monica presents Easy Tempeh Sloppy Joes posted at SmarterFitter Blog, saying, “Lots of people, veggies and meat eaters alike, don’t “get” tempeh. So here’s a little introduction and an easy recipe to get people going.” I’ve been wanting to cover the topic of tempeh for a while now, but they don’t seem to sell it here. So go read this intro to it instead!
- OK, this bullet actually includes two entries, all about bananas. Woman Tribune presents Natural Mango Banana Soup posted at Woman Tribune, saying, “Recipe for mango banana soup, an all-natural soup that will lift your spirits.” And Expat Chef presents Yes, We Have Bananas posted at The Expatriate’s Kitchen, saying, “A vegetarian-friendly and vegan-friendly duo of banana recipes.”
- Kate Saltfleet presents Why and how I became vegetarian posted at Experiments in Living. I enjoy reading about how others come to the decision to go vegetarian, and Kate’s is particularly well-written.
Congrats, top 5! (OK, technically this is a top 6.) But don’t stop reading yet - there were plenty of other fabulous entries this month, as well:
- Eccentric Vegan presents Kids Are Smart posted at Vegan Soapbox, saying, “Stories of kids and teens going veg.”
- Lisa presents Tender Chickpeas in Golden Karhi Sauce posted at Lisa’s Vegetarian Kitchen.
- Jaime presents Alternative Alternatives posted at surplus.
- Jade Blackwater presents Book Review: Not Just for Vegetarians posted at AppleJade, saying, “This is a book review of “Not Just for Vegetarians” by Geraldine Hartman, which offers a variety of recipes to suit family tastes. Geraldine’s book discusses the whys and hows of her choice to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle.”
- Theodore Pappas presents Animal Cruelty and the Biggest Beef Recall in History posted at Britannica Blog, saying, “The comments to this post are running hot and heavy. More comments are welcome. A fascinating, important topic.”
- Carole G. McKay presents Food For Thought posted at McKay Today, saying, “A case for vegetarianism and a recipe for change.”
- Lovelyn presents Whole Wheat Pizza Dough Recipe posted at The Art of Balanced Living.
- Linda Jo Martin presents Vegetarian Broccoli Cream Soup posted at Country Kitchen Pantry | Herbs, Spices, Recipes, Cooking, saying, “Great recipe for cold winter evenings.”
- Virginia Diaz presents Faux Beef Barley Soup posted at Virginia Diaz.
- Chef Erik presents Rigatoni with Broccoli and Vegetarian Steak posted at Chef Erik.
- Brad presents Dietary Review: Dr. McDougal posted at The Veggie Hub | Vegetarian and Vegan Reviews.
- Keith_R presents Gorgonzola Salad posted at The Screaming Saucepan, saying, “Healthy salad with an Italian accent”
- Christine presents Green Salad with Mozzarella and Walnuts in Honey Mustard Dressing posted at Me, My Kid and Life: An American Single Mom Living in France.
- Melissa presents Baked Penne With Roasted Vegetables posted at A Penny Closer.
- Lady Rose presents Pumpkin Muffins posted at The Diet Pulpit, saying, “These are so good!”
- Jean Mosher presents Kelly’s New Vegetarian Cooking Blog « Always in Motion posted at Always in Motion.
- 925er presents Edamame posted at 9to5ers: Montreal employee’s restaurant review, saying, “A delicious snack that requires close to no prep time.”
- Carole Fogarty presents The Authentic Chocolate Facial: A Superfood for your Skin: posted at THE HEALTHY LIVING LOUNGE, saying, “Raw cacao (cocoa) powder is now considered one of the worlds most beneficial super foods emerging in our world today. It has four times more antioxidants than goji berries, ten times the antioxidant level of blueberries and thirty times the antioxidant level of green tea.”
- Jamie McIntosh presents Garden Organically if Expecting posted at Suite101: Organic Gardens blog, saying, “Babies, children, and pregnant women must avoid the pesticides found in conventionally grown produce.”
See, I told you there were a lot of great posts. Want to play along? Submit your blog article to the next edition of the vegetarian carnival using our carnival submission form. The next deadline is March 31st, with the carnival on April 2nd.
And as always, contact me if you’re interested in hosting a future edition at your blog.

Hey Jul, thanks for including my tempeh in your top 5! And thanks for all the other great links. Love the post on bean soaking; I’ve got a batch of black-eyed peas on the soak as I type. I hope you can find tempeh in Germany soon. But I sympathize… it’s difficult to find in London, as well. As is seitan! Grrr….

It is so supremely lazy of me, but when I just can’t be bothered to surf, you are my one-stop place to go.
Thanks, Jul, for being hard working when I am not!
Cheers.
