V.C. Challenge: round up
So in the past week I have hunted down and killed purchased and brought home six fruits and six veggies that I don’t usually eat. I think it was a great success, since I managed to find a few items that I can see myself buying again, maybe even on a regular basis. It’s always fun to find new healthy foods to add to my diet.
With the exception of the tomacco kumato (which is technically a fruit, anyway), the veggies were all great successes. Even the ones I expected not to like, such as the brussels sprouts and red turnip, ended up getting rave reviews from both me and the husband. And kohlrabi is now one of my favorite healthy snacks.
The fruits weren’t as big of a success, but then again I’ve never really been a fruit person. With the exception of fresh berries and the occasional perfectly-ripe blood orange, it’s hard for a fruit to excite me. I did really enjoy the red currants and physalis, and I have to admit the pear was pretty delicious. My husband discovered he’s a big fan of persimmons.
So all in all, a very worthwhile experiment. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to inject a little healthy variety into their diet!

Great post! I realise how silly it is to miss on veg and fruit readily available just because we don’t know how to eat it or cook it. I saw how to prepare squash the other day on TV, it’s as easy as with spuds… but it’s that weird shape and shell that made me think “it must be really difficult to cook that” - duh!

Thanks, Celine! It’s true - there are so many fruits and veggies out there I’ve never seen prepared, so I tend to skip right over them at the grocery store. But I’m almost always happy with the results when I go out of my way to try something new. It’s just a matter of fighting laziness for me. :)
