V.C. Challenge day 6: Red Turnip and Red Currants

by Jul on November 16th, 2006

IMG 6844Red was the theme today as I scoured my local farmer’s market for a new fruit and a new veggie to try.

The veggie I decided upon was a type of red turnip (looks kind of like a beet or a human heart, at least to me). I asked the woman selling them how they are best prepared, and she recommended it raw grated in a salad.IMG 6838 Adding raw, colorful veggies to your diet is a good move health-wise, so I decided to give it a try. Result: really good! The red turnip had a mild and slightly sweet flavor that went well with the rest of my salad. I feel healthier already!

currantsFor a fruit I picked up a small container of red currants. I love these things - sour, not-too-sweet berries that go well with almost anything sweet. I ate them plain, but they are also good when served mixed with other, sweeter berries, or over vanilla ice cream. I’m thinking they might even go well with the vanilla persimmon I had earlier this week. Finally, a fruit that’s not too sweet for my taste!
