V.C. Challenge day 3: Kumquats and Kumato

by Jul on November 13th, 2006

IMG 6802 Shops are pretty much all closed in Zurich on Sundays (except for one very crowded supermarket at the train station), so I took yesterday off from my new-fruit-and-vegetable-every-day challenge.

Today I went to one of the larger specialty grocery stores in town to find some exotic treats. Grocery shopping every day is not particularly good for my budget, but it’s a whole lot of fun! The exotic treats for today were two foods I can’t remember ever having before in my life, so they definitely met the spirit of this project, which is to introduce some new, healthy foods into my diet.

The fruit of the day was kumquats. These are tiny little citrus fruits that you eat whole, skin and all. While I found the flavor quite nice, most of the kumquats were full of seeds that required spitting out, so it wasn’t the most fun eating experience. I think the kumquats also suffered from following physalis, one of my favorite fruits of all time, in the line-up.

IMG 6789The other new food I tried was kumato. Have you seen the episode of the Simpsons where they cross-breed tomatoes and tobacco to create highly addictive brown tomato-like things called ‘tomacco‘? I couldn’t stop thinking about that when it came to these things. More purple/brownish in color, the tomacco kumato tasted disappointingly like a tomato. The texture was quite nice, but the flavor was nothing special. Given that these tomacco kumato cost quite a bit more than tomatoes, I can’t see myself buying them again.
