Um… do you guys know any ‘vegetarians’ like this?
Here’s a little excerpt from the upcoming book How to Eat Like a Hot Chick (emphasis mine):
…we have a giant pet peeve about girls who call themselves “vegetarians,” but really eat a bunch of meaty bullshit and talk a bunch of bullshit. Now pay attention: a vegetarian is a person who does not eat meat. Period. This might seem really obvious, but we actually know many girls who call themselves vegetarians but will eat steak at a BBQ and say shit like, “Cook mine really well-done, ’cause I’m a vegetarian.”
Now I understand that How to Eat Like a Hot Chick is designed to be a foil to the very vegan (and popular) book Skinny Bitch (which I reviewed here), but come on. Is this the best these self-professed hot chicks can do? Dedicating a third of their “Note on Vegetarians” section to this ridiculous story? There are plenty of valid criticisms of Skinny Bitch out there; if you have something to say about that book, go for it. But making up fictitious steak-eating vegetarians to talk shit about is seriously lame. Self-professed vegetarians do not eat steak at BBQs. Sure there are vegetarians who are lax about meat products every once and a while, but that’s no reason to hate on them. Or make up stupid stories.
Here’s another tidbit from the “Note on Vegetarians” section of Hot Chick, a little advice for us veggie types:
…please do not talk shit to those who eat meat. Don’t look down on your friend’s turkey sandwich and say things like, “Eeewwww! Gross! How can you eat that?” Let them eat whatever they want — you don’t want them to say that shit about your tofu, do you? Play fair. You are not better than them.
Yes, I’ll wholeheartedly agree that there are some annoying morally-superior vegetarians out there. And there are plenty more annoying omnivores who like to make fun of, preach to, and otherwise marginalize vegetarians for what we eat. In fact, certain omnivores love to talk shit about tofu in particular. Where’s your little note to them, hot chicks?
I’ll be back with a full review of the book in a week or two. I’m hoping the authors redeem themselves in the final chapters. I really do want to like this book, especially since it presents itself as a ‘hot at any size’ alternative to diet books which glorify skinniness above everything else. That sounds fabulous to me. But this hating on imaginary faux-vegetarians? To borrow an expression from the book: definitely not hot.

I have to say, I also really get irked by folks who say, “I’m a vegetarian. But I eat fish sometimes.” I’ve been a vegetarian for ten years, and my grandmother (who ISN’T senile!) still sometimes asks, “But you eat fish, right?”
Vegetarians, or ANYONE, who comment disparagingly about other people’s food (eew, that smells weird/that looks gross/how can you eat that?) might be even more bothersome.

hmm….. I am pretty dubious based on your review (and the fact that I adored Skinny Bitch but don’t really see a need for an entire bookshelf of books trying to be it.) It sounds as if Hot Chick is trying to emulate Skinny bitch in tone and attitude, if not content. Why copy?

This isn’t a vegan book. I checked out the website and they are promoting Loreal products, which, I believe, test on animals.

This is the thing, when a product is innovative, high profile and like Skinny Bitch, causes quite a bit of controversy, there’s always a flock of sheep trying to recreate the same thing to cash in on the trend. Just for that reason I won’t bother and spend £ on it. SB was an enjoyable and very educative book, I don’t need pale copies.

Healthy - you’re right. This book isn’t even vegetarian (and doesn’t claim to be). The similarities between it and Skinny Bitch are more in style and attitude, not in the final diet they recommend.

[…] couple months ago, I gave the authors of the new book How to Eat Like a Hot Chick a little bit of a hard time for the way they talk to vegetarians in the book. So it’s only fair that I give them a little […]
