Some things are better left alone (especially fake jerky)
I’ve always been slightly amused at all of the fake-meat and fake-dairy products out there. There are hundreds of these products in existence, if not thousands. And when people evaluate such products, they usually do so by comparing the product to the meat or daily product it is supposed to emulate. Why do I care if something truly tastes like chicken or pate or hot dogs? I only care if it tastes good, and if it’s healthy for me.
But I do love trying new things, and curiosity got the better of me today at the Reformhaus when I came across veggie jerky (I tried to get you more information on it, but their website sucks). I decided that in the name of experimentation that a stick must be purchased.
At first the taste wasn’t entirely unpleasant - kind of like a slightly too-dry and too-salty vegetarian wurst. By the time I had eaten half of it, though, the saltiness was overwhelming. I put the rest back in the fridge for another time (perhaps to be consumed alongside some mild mozzarella or something else to absorb some of the saltiness - or would that be a waste of mozzarella?).
So my verdict is… I’m probably not going to be buying this stuff again. Sorry I can’t tell you whether it tastes like beef jerky or not, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually had beef jerky (and I’m not about to go eat some so I can compare them). The packaging says “listen to your heart”, and my heart is saying it doesn’t need this product.
