Shhh… don’t tell the Swiss…

I finally tried out the Lunch Box Fondue recipe from Vegan Lunch Box. I was horrified and then intrigued when I came across this recipe, and eventually my curiosity got the better of me. After procuring some nutritional yeast flakes (no easy task in Zurich), I was ready to give it a go.
My husband and I whipped up a batch of the vegan fondue and served it with bread cubes and steamed broccoli florets. At the very least, it was a whole lot healthier than a real cheese fondue, given that the recipe is based on tofu and carrots rather than fat-filled gruyere.
So here’s the problem: we live in Switzerland, the land of fondue. We eat it a lot, since it’s by far the best vegetarian food to come out of this country. Therefore, it was really, really hard for us to not be disappointed. I tried really hard to not compare the vegan fondue with cheese fondue, and instead just appreciate it for what it was.
This sort of worked, and I was able to enjoy the meal. It didn’t have the same consistency as real melted cheese, but it was a pleasant texture and flavor. My husband was less convinced. I’m definitely saving the recipe to make again, but I might have to wait until we live in another country to be able to fully enjoy it. :)

I must respectfully disagree… I’d say that raclette is the best vegetarian food of Switzerland! Don’t you agree?

Raclette does come in a close second (and we even own a raclette grill), but fondue is still my favorite.
