Putting cow poop to good use
I have been reading a lot recently about how very bad livestock are for the environment and the massive amounts of greenhouse gasses they produce. So I was thrilled to hear about (from my friend Sara) the The Straus Family Creamery and its greenhouse-gas-reducing technology.
The details of the process are not for the easily-queasy, but the idea is an impressive display of innovation. The dairy is able to run itself off of the electricity produced and then some - its electric meter runs backwards as they send electricity out onto the grid.
I wonder if their dairy products are as delicious as the site claims…

We use to get Straus cream, milk and ice cream all the time-and converted a few of our friends to it as well. The milk is up to “Swiss standards,” at least according to Jan, and everything we tried was so good!
They’re also as responsible as they claim-I actually emailed them once to ask a few questions about their animal husbandry and. . .they actually answered. . .and invited us to tour their farm.

I think that sounds like a great idea! Imagine how much electricity could be produced if ALL cow-owners were REQUIRED to do this. :)

[…] Jul at Veggie Chic talks about putting cow poop to good use. (And, no, I don’t think John Evans at Syntagma is putting cow patties to good use.) […]

We are hosting a western party and are looking for fake cow poop for a tossing party. Can you direct me?
