Proof that Munich loves its vegetarians

Yesterday we went out in search of somewhere to enjoy Sunday brunch in our new city (Munich, Germany). We managed to wander all the way to the center and ended up in front of the Weisses Brauhaus in the middle of the old town touristy district. Skeptical, we took a brief look at the menu and then followed the oompah music inside to a table (it’s hard to resist oompah music when you’re in a Bavarian kind of mood). I was delighted with the vegetarian choices on the menu, of which there were at least six or so.
I ordered the ‘big vegetarian plate’, and it lived up to all expectations: it was big, and it was vegetarian. I am a sucker for variety, so I loved this dish: spinach spatzle with mushroom cream sauce, Brussels sprouts, a boiled potato, greens, red cabbage, cauliflower with cheese sauce, cheese spatzle, a grilled tomato, cooked celery, and probably a couple other things I’m forgetting. I could barely finish half of it (accompanied by a delicious fresh pretzel), but my hungry husband happily finished everything I didn’t (except for the celery, which scared him). I will be back!

If you haven’t tried the restaurant, Prinz Myshkin (Hackenstrasse 2 in the old center), you absolutely should! We ate there twice during a week stay recently. And we aren’t even vegetarians, just lovers of good food. We read about Buxs Self-Service Vegetarian Restaurant in our old guidebook, but didn’t verify that it is still there at the Viktualien Markt.

Yes Melly, it’s my favorite restaurant in Munich!

I’ve been to Buxs, too, a while ago. It was pretty good, as I remember, but nothing as exciting as Prinz Myshkin. I’ll have to go again and write a review. :)

Thanks for the info on Munich. Last time we were there (2004) we had a really hard time finding anything other than chicken, pork or veal. I wasn’t even a vegetarian then… but even finding a decent salad was hard work! I can’t wait to go back, and this time, eat lovely German food, veggie style :)

You should also check out Zay Vegetarisch, and Zerwirk — both excellent.
If you find a good place to get tempeh and a variety of tofus, you should post that too!

Thanks for the recommendations, Nat! I’ll have to check those out.
I don’t think I’ve seen tempeh here yet, but Asian grocery stores tend to carry good tofu assortments. If you’re looking for more the flavored types of tofu, check a Reformhaus or two.
Saf, or have I mentioned how much fun it is to be a vegetarian in Munich?
