Pointy cabbage

I picked up this Spitzkohl, or pointed cabbage, last week at the vegetable market. I’m not usually a huge fan of cabbage, but I love trying new things, and I thought this cabbage was kind of cute.

It turned out to have a great flavor - mild and a little sweet. I used about half of it shredded in a soup with onions, garlic, mushrooms, TVP, a couple herbs and spices, and some porcini mushroom broth. It was the most delicious cabbage soup I have ever scarfed down.

Now, what to do with the other half?

Make cabbage and noodles:) My mother always made this while I was growing up. It’s easy. All it is is shredded cabbage, cooked egg noodles and saute the cabbage in a pan with butter or olive oil until cabbage is soft and then add noodles until heated through and season with salt and pepper.

Mmmm, that sounds so simple and good, Diana! I really like egg noodles, but don’t buy them much these days in favor of whole-wheat pasta. But I think trying out your mother’s recipe is worth picking some up. :)

I made stir-fry just tonight using this kind of cabbage. Shead it fine and put it in at the very end.

I have found whole wheat egg noodles here in the states and I forgot to add a chopped onion that you saute along with the cabbage.

For some reason, it was a bit shocking to see that on the page when it opened!

In Australia we call these sugar loaf cabbages - no idea why. Aren’t they gorgeous. They have a really short season here, so I buy them whenever I see them.

I often just cut the cabbage into four lengthways, steam it and then serve as a side dish to whatever else we’re eating. I usually need my cabbage to be much more flavoured, but the sugar loafs are glorious by themselves.

I can’t recommend any recipe because I don’t buy cabbage often but here are some simple recipes:
