NYT: Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler

by Jul on January 27th, 2008

Just wanted to point out a great article in The New York Times this morning: Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler . The information contained within is disturbing, but nothing really new. Still, I’m glad to see that the message is getting out there. So many compelling reasons exist to lower one’s meat consumption:

If price spikes don’t change eating habits, perhaps the combination of deforestation, pollution, climate change, starvation, heart disease and animal cruelty will gradually encourage the simple daily act of eating more plants and fewer animals.

All I can say, is when I stop eating meat, EVERYTHING HURTS, joints, muscles and I start cramping. When I start eating meat again, the pain goes away. This is especially true with steak or buffalo. I eat organic now because of health reasons, which generally helps with the cruelty issue. I find it hard to believe that eating all those processed vitamins to make up for the lost nutrients found in meat is any better for the environment. I just think we need to think of constructive ways to eat what we need in a way that does not destroy the environment.
