New series: Vegetarianism for Beginners

by Jul on August 9th, 2007

veg4begI’ve been receiving a lot of questions lately from people who are curious about reducing the amount of meat in their diet, but who are unsure how to proceed. These questions make a lot of sense - a lifetime of meat-centered meals can be hard to unlearn. When you remove meat as the star of the meal, what is there left to eat?

Lucky for us vegetarians, there’s plenty to eat that’s not meat. After 17 years of vegetarianism, I have to say that my number one reason behind my food choices is taste, pure and simple. I love vegetarian food! And I’m happy to share what I’ve learned along the way with anyone interested in reducing the meat they consume.

So if you’re looking to move towards a diet that’s healthy, delicious, and good for the planet, stay tuned for some tips on making the transition. Have specific questions? Leave a comment or send me an email (jul at b5media.com).

My recommendation for new vegetarians is to be prepared when you make the switch. There’s a good Web site called veganhealth.org. That should help alleviate your concerns about whether you are getting the proper nutrition. I’d also invest in a couple cooking books that have simple recipes. The top two as far as I’m concerned are “How It All Vegan” by Tanya Barnard and Sarah Krammer and “Vegan with a Vengence” by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. When know what to eat, you won’t get depressed thinking vegeatarianism isn’t working out. Vegans and vegetarians eat more than just salads you know. In fact, I’m not a big fan of salads, although I do enjoy them now and then.

I look forward to this information that you will be sharing. I have been slowly moving more vegetarian over the past year. I do have one question… I am allergic to soy and soy based products. Is there something else I could use as a substitute? I will be reading as you write on this topic more. Thank you!

This will be great! I will be checking back…I don’t have any trouble really making food choices. I don’t miss meat at all…the thing I miss most is eating cereal with milk. I don’t like it with vanilla soymilk…too sweet. I will have to try rice milk….

Seitan is vegan and soy-free. It is wheat gluten and can be made into many meat-like meals. Quorn is not vegan, but it is still vegetarian. It is a product that I had when I was a vegetarian. It is built primarily out of egg whites and a micro fungi that tastes remarkably like chicken. You really don’t have to eat soy or meat analogs. There are such a variety of recipes you can make without resorting to either. I’d start with the cookbooks I recommended and then look to the Web for support groups that deal with soy allergies.
