Veggie Chic

Nachos gone wrong

by Jul on April 6th, 2008

We went to the grand opening of a restaurant in our neighborhood the other day for a late dinner. There weren’t too many veggie options on the menu, so one of us ordered the nachos. This is what came. Half the chips were burnt, the cheese was a small solid, rubbery mass, and the salsa? I think it was sweet and sour sauce, more suited to spring rolls than nachos.

Moral of the story: stop trying to order Mexican food in Europe. Just give up already. You can make it at home! Will I never learn?

This is hilarious. Same thing goes for the Mexican food in London, where I’ve seen ketchup pass as salsa and yogurt subbed for sour cream. I can’t live without my Mexican food, so do a lot of cooking at home. Luckily, indian spices are very similar to Mexican spices, so there’s no shortage of cumin, cayenne, and coriander. I only wish I could make salsa as good as the stuff I used to get at any number of restaurants in Austin. But I keep practising.

More evidence of my theory, if I’m closer to the county of origin at home, don’t eat it while I’m traveling.

    Italian food in Europe, certainly!
Persian food in Europe, of course!
    Tex/Mex in Europe, no way.

I once opened a bag of organic tortilla chips that had several “charcoal” chips in it. Don’t get me wrong, I like blue corn chips but…

Oh my goodness. I feel like we are parallel life partners. I lived in Berlin for a year and missed Mexican food (and ueber-fresh corn tortillas) soooooo much. It was heart-breaking, especially since, as you mention, the nachos they have are so incredibly bad.

Do you live in Berlin now? What neighborhood?

LLP - I live in Munich now. I did spend a summer living in Berlin about 10 years ago, and I go back as often as I can. It’s such an amazing city!

Unfortunately the lack of good Mexican food seems to plague expats all over Europe. At least it gives me something to really look forward to when visiting the US. :)
