Fasting Update: Day Three

by Rhys on January 17th, 2006

Sorry for the delay, but I had fainted dead away from not eating. Just kidding! The third day was the easiest, with no hunger at all. Fasting definitely gets easier as you get further along.

So…was it worth it? Yes, mostly because I proved to myself that I could do it. A lot of the time, we fear or simply believe that we don’t control our behaviors, especially where eating is concerned. But knowing you can go three days without eating, without dieing or buckling, helps change your views. That was the biggest plus of the experience. I would especially recommend a short fast to compulsive overeaters, as I think it would be a step in alleviating the problem.

I’ve read that people tend to overeat following a fast, which is probably true. I certainly ate more than I needed today! But I think everything balances out.

I lost four pounds while fasting, which immediately came back after my first post-fasting meal, a small bowl of whole wheat pasta and broccoli. Holy expanding noodles, Batman! The body is a funny, funny thing.

I still haven’t been able to sleep: I’ve been up all night two days in a row.

I do regret that I missed out on the main ‘point’ of fasting, which is the mental reflection you’re supposed to experience. No wonder everyone recommends ‘getting away’ from your regular routine while fasting. But I was doing the same old thing with the same old stressors, so I missed out on that part. But, like I said earlier, it was still a victory.

Maybe the next thing I should try is Jeremy’s suggestion of eating just fruits and vegetables for a week…that sounds wonderfully healthy.

Thank you all so much for your help and support during this undertaking. If you have any questions, please ask. And if there’s some eating plan/nutritional undertaking you’re curious about, just let me know and maybe I can give it a try first.
