Christmas booty
I was happy to find a couple of kitchen gadgets under the tree (well, under the easel - no room for a tree in this tiny apartment!) this year. One thing I’d been needing for a while was a whistling tea kettle. I had developed a bad habit of putting on water for tea and then forgetting about it for way too long. The annoying high-pitched whistle of my new kettle makes sure I run to turn it off asap. And it’s shiny and red! To go along with it, I got a bunch of different kinds of tea, too. I may never use my coffee maker again…
The other kitchen gadget I received was a cast iron mortar and pestle. These are great for grinding up spices, or mottling limes for a caipirinia. Small and useful - I love it!
But the gifts that really are going to change what goes on in my kitchen are the two cookbooks I bought myself: Vegan with a Vengeance and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. It’s going to be a challenge to find some of the ingredients called for in several of the recipes here, but I’m looking forward to trying. Anyone know where to buy non-hydrogenated vegan shortening in Zurich?

You very lucky thing–I’m jealous of both your snazzy teapot and your funky mortar and pestle! I need new ones of both. The pot I have doesn’t whistle, and my ceramic mortar and pestle are too tiny. I’ve already broken one ceramic mortar from all the pounding. Didn’t even know cast-iron ones existed.
You’re so right about the whistle thing; too many times I’ve dangerously let things boil off, and not just water. A whistling teapot would help.
Gotta get a copy of Vegan with a Vengeance–I only just read about that book a few days ago. A few others are also sitting on my to-buy list. I’m addicted to vegetarian cookbooks.
Happy eating with your new books and enjoy your tea!

I was thinking the heavy cast iron was overkill for the mortar and pestle (it weighs a LOT), but if you’re breaking the ceramic ones, guess it’s not such a bad idea after all. :)
Before stocking up for the long weekend (stores here will be closed for the next 3 days) I consulted VwaV, and now we’re all set to try some yummy-sounding vegan recipes each day. I haven’t been this excited about a new cookbook in a long time. Should be fun!

My mom has a red tea kettle just like that. I don’t drink tea very often though, so I don’t have one.
I just ordered “Vegan with a Vengeance” from Amazon. I’d checked out a copy from the library, and there were so many good recipes in there that I decided I needed my own copy! :)

I’d be terrified to use a cookbook from the library - I am physically incapable of not spilling stuff on everything in the kitchen whenever I make anything. I’d return it and they’d revoke my library card…
So far I’m really enjoying VwaW - we had a great brunch today from it. I hope you like it, too!
