Wonder which fruits and veggies you should be buying organic? I recently printed out this handy guide featuring the 12 cleanest and dirtiest fruits and veggies (in terms of pesticides). Those items on the left contain the highest amount of pesticides when grown using conventional farming methods. The items on the right, on the other […]

I am definitely not what you would call a ‘plant person’. I’ve avoided houseplants for most of my life, and I’ve never had much interest in taking care of anything but a couple herb plants.
But a few weeks ago, all of this changed suddenly. On a whim, I bought up a bunch of dirt, pots, […]

Radishes are looking mighty fine at my local vegetable markets these days. Washed and trimmed, the make a refreshing snack all by themselves on a hot spring day.
Handling tip: remove the greens as soon as you get them home. This will help your radishes stay plump and juicy longer.

I spent a lot of time in Italy drooling over gorgeous displays of fresh fruits and veggies at the many green markets we encountered. Even though I can find pretty good produce at home in Germany, it’s nothing compared to the sumptuous offerings at even the most modest of Italian farm stands. The tomatoes, artichokes, […]

It’d be remiss of me not to mention the start of asparagus season (Spargelzeit) here in Germany. You have never seen a more celebrated vegetable! There are stands all over town selling the stalks by the kilo, and many restaurants have special asparagus menus. They love this stuff here!
If the photo looks a bit off […]

Even though the weather is still changeable here, spring is definitely showing at the vegetable market - finally some new items are starting to show up.
The other day I picked up these perfectly round, white turnip-like thingies labeled Mairüben. A little poking around on the internet, and the best I can do for an English […]

One of the grocery stores in my neighborhood has been selling packages of these sweet red peppers labeled as “snack peppers”, and I think they’re onto something! I’ve always been a fan of snacking on bell peppers, but these guys have a couple of advantages. First of all, they are much cheaper per kilo than […]

I picked up this Spitzkohl, or pointed cabbage, last week at the vegetable market. I’m not usually a huge fan of cabbage, but I love trying new things, and I thought this cabbage was kind of cute.
It turned out to have a great flavor - mild and a little sweet. I used about half of […]

Back in December, my husband and I visited a whole bunch of friends and relatives across the US. We enjoyed their hospitality, marveled at their American-sized appliances, and generally had a wonderful time. But during this marathon trip of peeking into the lives of our loved ones, I was surprised at how many of them… […]

Always on the lookout for new exciting groceries to experiment with, I picked up this packet of nori flakes the other day. Nori is the toasted seaweed that is used to wrap sushi rolls, and these flakes are basically just like tiny pieces of those sheets. I got these at a natural foods store in […]
