I am definitely not what you would call a ‘plant person’. I’ve avoided houseplants for most of my life, and I’ve never had much interest in taking care of anything but a couple herb plants.
But a few weeks ago, all of this changed suddenly. On a whim, I bought up a bunch of dirt, pots, […]

Looks like I’m not going to have time to write a full review of The Jungle Effect, but I did want to mention it here because so far it’s been a delight to read. The book chronicles an American doctor’s search for the healthiest diets from around the world by looking at disease “cold spots” […]

Another impulse buy at my local Asian grocery store the other day - Japanese soba noodles. I made my own dipping sauce out of soy sauce, rice wine, and vegetarian dashi. The noodles cooked very quickly, and then I rinsed them with cold water and served them cold. Easy and delicious.

I love garlic-stuffed green olives. I picked up a couple jars of them the other day… or so I thought. They were sitting together on the shelf, but I didn’t look closely enough at the second package, and when I got home I found out that one of them was green olives stuffed with almonds […]

Rashunda asks, “Is there really such a thing as ‘Vegetarian Soul Food’?”
I’m definitely not a Soul Food expert, so I did a little googling, and found that at least some people out there think that Vegetarian Soul Food is not an oxymoron. I spent quite a while perusing VegetarianSoulFood.com and drooling over recipes such as […]

I’d been wanting to try Blue Nile, an Ethiopian restaurant here in Munich, for a while now. This weekend I finally got a chance to go, and it was definitely worth the trip. I’ve been a fan of Ethiopian food for a while now, partially because there’s always some fabulous vegetarian items on the menu. […]

OK, so I finally got around to trying out this green smoothie thing. That is, I tried incorporating some leafy greens into some smoothies. First it was baby spinach leaves, which I blended with a banana, frozen strawberries, and water. The result was OK, completely drinkable, but I didn’t feel like the flavor was enhanced […]

I have fallen in love with my bottle of liquid smoke. I’ve been experimenting with it in everything these days - soups, tofu, stir-fries, salad dressings… you name it, I’ve probably tried it with a splash of liquid smoke. Not that I’d recommend it with everything - liquid smoke’s strong flavor can be overpowering, so […]

Even though the weather is still changeable here, spring is definitely showing at the vegetable market - finally some new items are starting to show up.
The other day I picked up these perfectly round, white turnip-like thingies labeled Mairüben. A little poking around on the internet, and the best I can do for an English […]

I had a block of fresh tofu in the fridge the other week that I wasn’t going to have a chance to use before I left on vacation, so I tossed it in the freezer. Freezing tofu changes its texture some, making it more sponge-like. It still works in stir-frys just fine once it’s thawed […]
