Every day now there’s something to pick out of our balcony garden. Zucchini flowers are blooming faster than we can eat them, so we’re starting to let a few stay on the plant so the zucchinis themselves can get bigger (but no baseball bats!). We get a few juicy strawberries every day, and yesterday harvested […]

Don’t make this mistake.
Note: “Naan” is a kind of Indian flatbread which can be plain or flavored with, for example, garlic. It’s delicious. Although I’ve never tried to make my own, apparently it’s pretty easy. Yum!

I am definitely not what you would call a ‘plant person’. I’ve avoided houseplants for most of my life, and I’ve never had much interest in taking care of anything but a couple herb plants.
But a few weeks ago, all of this changed suddenly. On a whim, I bought up a bunch of dirt, pots, […]

Mmmmm… fresh herbs are so very yummy. And for the most part, they’re easy to grow. Even if you live in an apartment, a window box can be plenty of space for your herb garden. And the addition of fresh herbs can turn the simplest meal into a culinary delight.
This year I am inspired to […]

‘This’ meaning ’shattering a half-full bottle of olive oil on the kitchen floor.’ While barefoot. And letting dinner burn while you clean up. Trust me, it’s not as fun as it sounds.
Anyone else have any kitchen disaster stories to share?

On a whim, we visited a new Afghan restaurant in our neighborhood the other day. The decor was cozy and warm. The menu was limited, but we managed to settle on a vegetarian pumpkin appetizer and two vegetarian main courses, one spinach-based and the other eggplant-based. No alcohol was served, but there were several interesting […]

The Scots love haggis. So proud they are of this national dish (usually made with sheep innards), they want to make sure that everyone gets a chance to take part - even vegetarians. I’ve been served vegetarian haggis twice now (most recently at a very fun Burns Night), and I’ve never even been to Scotland.
So […]

I’m warning you in advance: this is going to be a whiney post.
I love my new apartment to pieces. It has great space, great windows, great views, a great location… but the kitchen? Not so great. Not only is it tiny and cramped and short on counter space (all of which I can handle), but […]

New York (home of the infamous Sushi Memo) is the place to be for sushi. I can’t believe I only managed to eat it once this time around. I need to go back! At least the one place I went was plenty delicious. Mishima had many veggie choices on the menu, making it hard for […]

As I mentioned a couple days ago, I decided to get a Tofurky for Thanksgiving. It turned out better than I expected (granted, my expectations were pretty low). The tiny little 6-serving roast had to jockey for position in an oven full of a giant turkey, dressing, pies, and other stuff, but it managed to […]
