4 fabulous reasons to eat less meat in 2007
As you’re sitting down to make out your New Year’s Resolutions for 2007, consider adding “eat less meat” to the list. And if you’re already a vegetarian, you could cut down on dairy or eggs. Here are more than enough reasons to go veggie in 2007:
- Your body will thank you! The disease-fighting benefits of a vegetarian diet are all the reason I need to stay away from meat. Cutting the meat from your diet has been proven to reduce the risk of all kinds of health problems, from diabetes to cancer. Don’t you want to treat your body well?
- The environment will thank you! Eating low on the food chain (ie, eating plants instead of animals) helps reduce your carbon footprint and your negative impact on the environment.
- You’ll be able to eat with a clear conscience, knowing that when you eat meat-free, you’re not supporting factory farming. Not only does factory farming involve a lot of unnecessary animal cruelty, but eating its meat products fills your body with a lot of unhealthy antibiotics and growth hormones.
- It can help you with that other resolution… you know the one. One site I found quoted the average weight loss for an omnivore who turns veggie as 10% of body weight. Not that going veggie is a miracle diet - even a vegan can eat high-calorie junk food all day and be obese. But if you base your diet on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and vegan protein sources (such as legumes and tofu), chances are you’ll find yourself at a healthy size sooner or later.
I’ll be coming out with a series of posts in the coming weeks with ideas to help you implement these new eating habits, but the first step is to get excited about making a change that is going to be good for you and the planet.
