I’d been wanting to try Blue Nile, an Ethiopian restaurant here in Munich, for a while now. This weekend I finally got a chance to go, and it was definitely worth the trip. I’ve been a fan of Ethiopian food for a while now, partially because there’s always some fabulous vegetarian items on the menu. Blue Nile was no exception, and our party of four happily ordered the sampler of vegetarian dishes.
All the food came served in one giant dish, as is typical at the Ethiopian restaurants I’ve been to. Instead of using utensils, diners tear off pieces of injera, a spongy flat bread, and use this to scoop up the food. There were several different lentil dishes, as well as some greens, potatoes, and other veggies on our giant platter. Everything was delicious. I can’t wait to go back.
Blue Nile has two locations, both in Munich’s hip Schwabing neighborhood. Reservations are a good idea during peak hours.

Since my days of vegetarian blogging are numbered, I thought I’d give my readers one last chance to ask me whatever lingering questions you might have for me. Want to know what I eat for breakfast? What my favorite veggie restaurant is? What I really think of PETA? Ask away! I’ll choose my favorite questions and answer them here during May, before I depart.
To submit a question, either put it in the comments of this post or email me at jul@b5media.com.

So after a year and a half of writing at Veggie Chic, I have decided to move on. This was a hard choice for me, since I’ve really enjoyed blogging here and ‘meeting’ so many other bloggers in the process. But the decision stands, and I’ll likely stop posting by the end of May. Which means…
Veggie Chic needs a new blogger! Interested? If so please contact Kendra James (kendra.james@b5media.com) with “Veggie Chic Blogger” in the subject line. Include some information about why you think you’d be right for the job, links to a few of your blog posts (assuming you have some), and some of your ideas for Veggie Chic. Also let her know whether you have any Wordpress experience.

OK, so I finally got around to trying out this green smoothie thing. That is, I tried incorporating some leafy greens into some smoothies. First it was baby spinach leaves, which I blended with a banana, frozen strawberries, and water. The result was OK, completely drinkable, but I didn’t feel like the flavor was enhanced by the addition of the spinach. I would have enjoyed the spinach more if it had been lightly steamed and served as a side dish. But then again, I love spinach. I just don’t want my fruit to taste like it.
My second green smoothie attempt was with butter lettuce (with the same banana, strawberry, and water combo). The results were completely different this time. The flavor was definitely noticeable, but not easily identifiable. I thought it was fine the first time I had one, but not too exciting. So I was surprised when, the next day, I actually craved a lettuce-flavored smoothie. I seem to like them more each time I try them.
While I found the lettuce smoothies to be surprisingly pleasant, I’m not sure how often I’ll actually drink them. The greens were a bit of a challenge for my feeble blender, which is on its last legs. But I do appreciate having yet another way to enjoy getting my leafy greens.
Have you ever tried a green smoothie? What do you think?

I spent a lot of time in Italy drooling over gorgeous displays of fresh fruits and veggies at the many green markets we encountered. Even though I can find pretty good produce at home in Germany, it’s nothing compared to the sumptuous offerings at even the most modest of Italian farm stands. The tomatoes, artichokes, green peas, fresh garlic, delicate lettuces… yum!
It’s a real treat for me to get to prepare my own meals in Italy after a day of food shopping. When you start with such amazing, fresh, local ingredients, it takes very little effort to make an extraordinary meal. I highly recommend it to anyone who gets the chance.

I just got back from a week of eating my way through Italy. Details coming soon, including reviews of a couple new vegetarian restaurants I got to try. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.
